During the first week of March, GTH-DNA President Tim Schellberg and the founders of the “Justicia Forense – DNA Latin America” campaign, Kevin Mills and Daniela Suárez, visited the Republic of Argentina to promote the development of a national and provincial policy on forensic DNA databases to strengthen criminal prosecution tools in this country.
Discussions were held with national and regional authorities in Buenos Aires and in the Province of Santa Fe. At these meetings, which were also attended by police, legislative and investigative bodies, mechanisms for coordination were discussed to create a regulatory framework to regulate the use of information related to forensic DNA and the technological and technical improvement of their laboratories and criminal investigation teams.
An important point was the technical meeting held with the Minister of National Security, Patricia Bullrich, and her team, with whom they discussed the technical support of Justicia Forense, to modify the national legislation, where all crimes are included, not only sexual crimes, as is currently the case; and a formal communication was prepared addressed to the United States government, requesting financial support from the government and other possible donors, for the installation of the CODIS software and the creation of profiles of the prison population.
The Argentine government is aware of the need to strengthen the judicial system with tools that allow for the effectiveness of justice, to confront the growing wave of crime and criminality associated with drug trafficking and illegal profits. This advance is a public demonstration of the good will of its current leaders and a call to the international community to attract foreign investment and generate confidence in the markets that will allow them to overcome their economic crisis.
