DNA Database Law Approved in Honduras

Justicia Forense – DNA Latin America celebrates the approval of the National DNA Database System Law in Honduras. This law strengthens criminal prosecution through the use of forensic genetic profiles to ensure justice and clarify the truth in such important cases as the situation of missing persons, human trafficking and other crimes related to organized crime operating in this country.

The success comes after almost a year of debate in the National Congress of Honduras that began in October 2022. The Law was finally approved on August 9, 2023, with positive votes from the benches of Partido Libertad y Refundación, Partido Liberal, PSH, Democracia Cristiana and PAC.

A key point in this Law is that it dictates the parameters and conditions for the use of the National DNA Database System, which will be administered by the Public Prosecutor’s Office through the General Directorate of Forensic Medicine and will have as its objective the systematization and storage of forensic genetic information in accordance with the cases stipulated in this standard.
