Alec John Jeffreys, fellow of the Royal Society (Oxford, United Kingdom, January 9, 1950) is a British geneticist who developed the techniques of genetic fingerprinting and DNA profiling that are currently used by forensic science to assist the police in their investigative work. The same technique has proven very useful in resolving paternity disputes. He is Professor of Genetics at the University of Leicester and was given the keys to the city on 26 November 1992. In 1994, he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in recognition of his contributions to the world of science and technology.
